Hollywood Hills was officially called “Hollywoodland” and began in 1923 when development started.
The Hollywood sign we’re familiar with was originally built to advertise the new development in the hills around the Beachwood Canyon neighborhood. Mind you, this was way before one ever envisioned the current homes lining the Hollywood Hills.
During this time instead of homes dotting the hills, it was numerous vegetation including greasewood, poppies and oak trees. Quite different indeed.ย
At this moment in time, the developers of the Hollywood Hills set out to build exclusive gated communities aimed at those rising in the movie industry. They were selling building lots ranging from … wait for it … $2,300 to $54,000!
The Hollywoodland sign was being illuminated by over 4,000 bulbs so that it could shine brightly enough, and bring attention to, the new development that was going on in the Hollywood Hills.
If one decided to purchase a plot of land in The Hills, there were some rules to be followed.
For example, the types of homes that were allowed to be built had to fall into one of 4 categories: Tudor English, Mediterranean, Spanish or French Normandy styled homes.ย
Hollywood Hills History Includes Celebrity Help
Throughout its time the Hollywood sign required constant maintenance and improvements.
Around 1978 a group of Hollywood power players, including Hugh Hefner and Gene Autry, donated enough money to construct each letter for the new sign. In the year of 1978 the old Hollywood sign was torn down and the construction of the new, better built, sign was started and finished over the course of 3 months.
Incase you’re wondering, the sign is currently monitored by satellite view, infrared cameras and park rangers. So don’t try anything out of the ordinary.
Fast forward to current times, Hugh Hefner once again came to the rescue in 2010 when he, along with other Hollywood players, purchased 138 acres of land around the sign for 12.5 million.ย
This was due to the potential sell of residential parcels that would have destroyed the unobstructed view of the Hollywood sign.
